A series of material property characterisation tests were carried out to evaluate the performance of three candidate material systems as repair patch and adhesive materials for battle damage repair applications. These material systems are: a wet-layup material system using dry carbon fabric and two-part epoxy resin; a material system using pre-cured laminate patch and rapid curing acrylic adhesives; and a material system using room temperature storage carbon/epoxy prepregs and film adhesives. Test results showed that: the wet-layup material system has adequate laminate stiffness and strength and bonding strength for battle damage repair applications; the strengths of two selected acrylic adhesives were insufficient for battle damage repair applications with the rapid surface treatment method in highly stressed areas of aircraft structures. However, these adhesives may still be applied to aircraft structures in low stress regions. For the room temperature storage epoxy prepregs and film adhesive, initial tests showed that laminates made of both ACG and ATK prepregs have sufficient strengths for battle damage repair applications. Shelf life tests showed that the shelf life of ATK prepregs at room temperature would be longer than 15 months, whilst the shelf life of the ACG prepreg at room temperature is just over 3 months. Shelf life tests indicated that the shelf life of ACG film adhesive at room temperature is just over 3 months.
