SAFESPOT is an integrated research project cofunded by the European Commission DG Information Society and Media among the initiatives of the 6th Framework Programme. The objective is to understand how intelligent vehicles and intelligent roads can cooperate to produce a breakthrough for road safety. The general aim of the project is to create a Safety Margin Assistant, detecting potentially dangerous situations between road users of any kind in advance. A detailed description of the various research activities within SAFESPOT can be found in the given literature. As a reliable path prediction of road users is a complicated task, a lot of sensing information has to be processed. To enable the identification of other road users' positions on the street correctly, the host vehicle's position and orientation has to be known precisely. An individual sub-project within SAFESPOT covers the development of high-precision positioning of the host vehicle. By using these results of the SINTECH sub-project, a very precise position estimate of the host vehicle can be used in the object tracking algorithms of SAFEPROBE which are described in this paper. The complete system structure has been outlined previously. As expected there, performance results for the SAFESPOT system have been obtained as the project progressed. This paper will present some of the project results.
