After introducing the BlueTEC technology for passenger cars in October 2006 in the E-Class, Mercedes-Benz enhanced the Clean Diesel Strategy with the BlueTEC generation for the SUVs on the market in USA. Due to the intensive development, the GL-, M- and R-Class BlueTEC vehicles are the first BIN5-/ULEV-certificated diesel in about 50 states of the USA. The technological achievements of BlueTEC clean Diesel technology were already appreciated with the 'World green car of the Year 2007' and European award 'grünes Lenkrad 2008'. The further development dealing with the rollout for the European and Japanese market to fulfil i.e. the Euro 6 regulation before it became obligatory. This report describes the challenges and boundary conditions of introducing a sustainable Diesel Technology for passenger cars and SUV-Class in worldwide markets. The market shares of diesel engines in Europe, Japan and USA are increasing. Furthermore the CO2 emission standards are claiming for a low-carbon model fleet. With the BlueTEC technology Mercedes-Benz offers a diesel powertrain for markets in USA, which is as clean as a gasoline concept. Now Mercedes-Benz is going to extend this technology for markets in Europe and Japan, because of its potential of fulfilling valid emission standards all over the world. Considering the ultra low emission limits the BlueTEC clean diesel can get even more competitive in fuel efficiency and therefore give the diesel the possibility to make its contribution towards the CO2-reduction all over the world. But the demands on OBD legislation are increasing hardly and the emission standards all over the world are getting tightened. In addition there are several obstacles by very different infrastructure and environmental conditions all over the world. That's why the required effort on research and development continues to rise. Despite all that, the challenge is to implement the Clean Diesel Technology on markets all over the world for Green Technology Leadership.
