Recently, several members of ASNTs Chicago Section were involved in an aerospace project pertaining to a North American F-86 Sabre Jet from the Korean War era (around 1952). The F-86 was an improvement on the original straight-winged aircraft of the time, which had difficulty in building speed and could not approach the sound barrier. With the swept wing design of the F-86, speed was increased and maneuverability allowed the aircraft to dive and turn faster than its adversary of the time, the MiG-15. The plane inspected by the Chicago Section had been in service for several years with the Argentinean Air Force and was purchased by the Warbird Heritage Foundation (WHD for its museum of older military aircraft. The WHF is a not-for-profit foundation located at the Waukegan Airport in Waukegan, Illinois, that was created for the purpose of acquiring, restoring, displaying and demonstrating various antique aircraft of historic military significance. With a focus on preserving its aircraft in flying condition for use at air shows and other special events, the WHF strives to promote public interest in historic military aircraft. The main concern of the WHF was the jet's wing attachment and adjacent areas. The technical order for the North American F-86 Sabre Jet indicated that radiographic, liquid penetrant and magnetic particle testing would be useful methods. it is shown, that the radiographic test formed a baseline for the aircraft for comparison to future inspections.
