Delphi is currently developing a fast solenoid injector for lean stratified applications on gasoline engines. The injector uses an outwardly-opening valve group to generate a hollow-cone spray with a stable, well-defined recirculation zone to support spray-guided stratification in the combustion chamber. This injector achieves fast opening and closing, giving an extended linear flow range and allowing multiple, closely-spaced injections in the stratified operating mode. In this paper, the performance and spray characteristics of the injector are reviewed, including close-coupled multi-pulse performance. The resulting fuel economy potential is then presented at the engine and vehicle level to show the results that are possible with when applying this fast solenoid injector.
