Electric and hybrid technologies are opportunities to develop silent vehicles. But whining noises generated by the electric motor can create annoyance for passengers, pushing car manufacturers to take them into account in their development process. Fortunately whining noises can be more or less perceived and even totally masked by other broadband noise sources such as tire / road or aerodynamic noises. This masking effect offers a possibility to optimize acoustic conception of the electric engine and its transfer paths. It is then essential to have effective tools for specifying whining levels very early in the development process. Many tone-to-noise metrics can be found in current acoustic software, but it is often necessary to improve them in order to efficiently predict perceived level or acceptability of tonal emergences. A first experimentation is conducted to quantify audibility thresholds of electrical whining noises at different speeds in a hybrid car (with powertrain turned off). The audibility threshold is then predicted by comparing whining level to noise level in the critical band, based on Gammatone filtering. A second listening test is conducted to quantify annoyance of whining noises. Acceptability is then modeled with the same optimized tone-to-noise ratio indicator based on Gammatone filters. Finally a specific tool is developed in order to automatically estimate the acceptability of electric whining noises for Hybrid vehicles. An example is shown of how this tool is used for the vehicle requirement phase.
