The test programme has shown that it is possible to use decay rate measurement as a basis for evaluating modifications to the damper design and layout to produce a lower cost damper which gives a sub optimal performance. The importance of a good rail damping system is demonstrated by the rapid increase in 'Performance Loss' seen as the amount of damping per metre is reduced. 1 should be noted however, that a 'sub-optimal' system such as a 30cm long block placed every sleeper bay is likely to see only a small loss in overall noise reduction relative to the optimised system. For example, if the reduction in rail noise of the optimised system is measured (for example) at 7dB(A), the test programme suggests that a 30cm block will give a rail noise component reduction of around 5.6dB(A). Dependant on the relative dominance of the other noise sources (wheels, sleeper, train etc), this may have limited effect on the overall noise reduction. It would however have a significant impact on the product cost, and therefore the costs faced by the Client in complying with legislation. The measurements conducted as part of this project will be used by Tata Steel as part of its onging development of rail dampers, and will enhance Tata Steel's capability in providing Clients with solutions tailored to their needs.
