The aim of this paper is to give an overview about the main requirements for automotive power modules used in hybrid and Electric Vehicles ((H)EV). First the motivation for (H)EV is given. Secondly an overview of the different power electronic systems present in an electric vehicle will be shown. After that, the three main requirements for automotive power modules are identified, explained and analyzed in detail: efficiency, reliability and cost. Finally, and based on the previous considerations, trends for future power modules will be given, taking aspects into considerations like package, performance, production, cost, reliability and efficiency.
