This paper presents a state of the art and different structures of a permanent-magnet electric variable transmission (PM-EVT) for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) applications. The concept and functions of EVT is firstly introduced compared with Toyota Prius HEV. Different PM-EVT concepts are then presented covering the structures, applications, and the research progresses, etc. Finally, the authors detail various possible PM-EVT structures.
