Efficient heating methods have a significant leverage effect to reduce the range reduction of vehicles with electrified power train during winter time. Common cabin heaters using PTC-technology (PTC: positive temperature gradient) just transform electrical energy in heat. Heat pumps transform electrical power in heating power but also pump additional energy from a lower to a higher temperature level resulting in higher efficiencies. Well-known examples are heat pumps based on a refrigerant circuit. MAHLE-Behr show in a presentation a new kind of heat pump for efficient cabin heating based on the thermoelectric Peltier effect. Thermoelectric heat pumps can be an attractive solution for an efficient cabin heating in order to reduce the range reduction of pure electric vehicles and Plug-In hybrids in electrical mode at cold ambient temperatures. Even though the temperature levels of the different cooling loops are not suitable for cabin heating, the thermoelectric heat pump can use the waste heat in the coolant and pump it on a higher and thus useable temperature level. Measurements showed that the coefficient of performance of a thermoelectric heat pump is considerably larger than 1 as it is the case for an ideal PTC heater. Beside this the thermoelectric heat pump needs no moving parts at all and much less parts than a refrigerant heat pump. The thermoelectric heat pump is now integrated in the Porsche e-Boxster as part of the public founded project "E-Generation".
