Analyses of surface errors of reflector antennas have mainly concentrated on the effects of r.m.s. surface errors on antenna gain. Few comparisons of calculated versus measured patterns have been previously published. This paper shows comparisons for the 15 meter hoop/column mesh reflector which consists of four quadrants; each of which operates as an independent antenna. This antenna is the largest deployable mesh antenna that has been assembled, deployed and RF tested. It is designed to deploy from a compact package in the Space Shuttle cargo bay. Called a 'hoop-column' antenna - for the shape of its main structural elements - the concept was conceived by NASA's Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia and the Harris Corporation, Melbourne, Florida to demonstrate that large space antenna concepts are feasible. Large space antennas of this precision and size or larger allow an increased sensitivity and resolution to weak microwave signals from the ground or from other points in space. This antenna was built by Harris Corp. and has been measured in the Martin Denver Near Field Test Facility.
