A generic knowledge system development environment, called PARAGON, has been used to model a satellite for the purpose of automated fault detection and correction. This paper describes the satellite's electrical power subsystem and how PARAGON was used to model the subsystem. PARAGON provides automated code generation that permits immediate verification of the model through simulation. Once verified, the model becomes the knowledge base for an expert system in which generic functional modules detect and diagnose malfunctions and suggest corrective action. The usefulness of such a system and implications for future space systems are discussed.
