This presentation is about the knowledge based system developed for scheduling Iberia Airlines fleet, and the process used in developing the system. All airplanes are under strict regulation for their maintenance cycle. This cycle, with lead times in excess of a year for spare parts and unexpected aircraft down-time, makes the scheduling of planes into a maintenance hanger one of the most difficult tasks in running an airline. Furthermore, keeping planes maintained in a safe and cost-effective fashion is frequently in conflict with the airlines business of providing fast, convenient and safe transportation. While the total resolution of this problem is a system level solution, the use of a knowledge-based system as a component in that solution is essential. The rapid development of a prototype capable of providing needed and valuable assistance in this problem is made feasible using commercially available knowledge engineering technologies. The prototype itself not only resolved the feasibility issue, but provided insight into the user interface and systems interconnection issues so that planning for implementation can be accurate and complete.
