The Road Transport Informatics (RTI) technology can open up a new channel between traffic management and the drivers in individual vehicles. A data link between the road infrastructure and each individual vehicle can provide on-line dynamic information. This can either be edited by the on-board computer and presented to drives via a general purpose display, or used as signals to an automatic co-driver, relieving the human driver of tedious, mechanical driving. The vehicle co-driver is based on computers, artificial intelligence, sensors, hydraulics and electromechanics. It replaces some of the hum intelligence, senses, muscles, hands and feets of the driver. The ultimate use of RTI technology is the automated vehicle, that efficiently and ecologically and in comfort carries the passenger to his destination, predictably Just-In-Time, safely as staying in our homes, and as easy to use as a lift. It may take another fifty years before we can achieve this, or even wish this to happen. This paper presents a number of basic and derived RTI functions. The integration and implementation of these functions is described in a scenario. It should be remembered that a scenario is a mere outline of what can happen, rather than a forecast of what will happen in the future. The scenario format is used here as a conceptual tool to study different integration alternatives.
