The subject of radar for automotive applications has been researched for several decades, but few working units have been demonstrated and no viable production has resulted. Recently, however, there has been a growing interest from car manufacturers as certrain key technologies reach maturity. This paper focuses on the emergence of precision plastic moulding as a viable technology for the mass production of true low cost 94 GHz radars. Results are presented from working radars in terms of millimetre wave and environmental performance. Realistic low cost component manufacture is demonstrated, and an insight into low cost radar mass production is presented.
