The demand for railway transportation in big cities has been constantly growing. Accordingly, the capacity of transportation is being expanded by constructing new railways and increasing the density of a train's operation on existing lines. At the same time, the capacity of existing railway substations is being expanded and new substations are being constructed to meet the growing demand for electric power in this field. In big cities, where land prices have been rising and available land has been dwindling recently, railway substation systems different in performance and type from those used in local towns and cities have become necessary. A smaller size and higher reliability are among the major requirements of railway substation systems for big cities. As the latest technologies for meeting those requirements, a high speed vacuum circuit breaker (HSVCB) and a non-flammable liquid-cooled transformer and stationary have been developed. For the power management system, which centrally controls the railway substations in a big city, the introduction of a failure recovery support system that applies a workstation and knowledge processing is planned.
