As in many areas, oceanographic applications will become increasingly information-intensive during the 1990's, computing technology continuos to improve rapidly in its performance/cost ratio and as information management concepts become increasingly general. The objective of this paper is to provide a brief survey of some major developments in a few significant areas of advanced computing technology and information management with examples of how these developments will affect various oceanographic applications. The cited references supply further information. The primary areas of information technology to be discussed in this paper are: data and information management, computing processor and architecture performance, communication networks, and software engineering. Brief mention is made of the areas of artificial intelligence, image computing, human computer interaction, and information technology standards.
