A plastic optical fiber network, installed in automobiles, will be applied to limited areas in the two different spaces comprising the passenger compartment, with a mild environment occupying about 2/3 of a car, and the engine room, with a hot harsh environment. Plastic optical fiber (hereinafter, 'POF') with a PMMA core should be recommended for use in the passenger compartment, and heat-resistant POF in the engine room. POF with a polycarbonate (PC) core is becoming applicable as a heat-resistant POF, in spite of its high transmission loss. Since PC core POF with a large numerical aperture (NA) has a large optical reception capacity, it can transmit a sufficient quantity of light when used in automobiles where relatively short-length POF is required. Measurement of the bandwidths of POFs revealed that POF with a PC core had a sufficient bandwidth. Connecting PMMA core POF with PC core POF was also examined and proved to have virtually no serious effects on transmission loss and bandwidth.
