Fiber-optic gyroscopes are investigated that use an integrated optical gyrochip and low-cost elliptical-core polarization-maintaining optical fiber for use in vehicles. These gyroscopes operate with phase-modulation signal-processing electronics. Fiber-to-fiber insertion loss derivation of the gyrochip is less than plus/minus 0.4 dB at a wavelength of 0.83 micron over a temperature range of -30 to +80 deg C, while the core dimensions of the pigtailed elliptical-core optical fiber are only 4x1 micron. A gyroscope was developed for navigation systems and on-board testing is now being performed. A gyroscope for chassis control systems is also being developed.
