The paper assesses the status of switched reluctance technology in the context of electric vehicles. It briefly covers the technical background of the drives and considers the requirements of traction applications. It covers performance characteristics and gives particular examples of traction drives using SR technology. Costing compared with other technologies is discussed. The paper concludes that the SR drive has significant advantages in a wide range of parameters.
