Modern electronics opens up new prospects in automotive engineering. The various demands placed on spark-ignition engines - many of them conflicting, such as high power output, low fuel consumption and low pollutant emissions - can now be reconciled in an optimum way. These technological advances and the engineering effort spent on engine management systems result in mechatronic systems like BOSCH-MOTRONIC. They combine fuel-management and ignition systems controlled by a single microcomputer in accordance with common optimization criteria. This paper will show the process of developing engine management functions, e.g. a throttle valve controlling algorithm. The process is based on the realtime simulation tool ASCET.
