The Motor Industry Software Reliability Association (MISRA) is a UK automotive industry consortium formed to prepare guidelines to assist in the application and creation within vehicle systems of safe, reliable software. The motivation for the MISRA study is the growth in the number of electronic control systems fitted to road vehicles. These systems are often responsible for functions with safety implications and contain complex embedded software. It is necessary to ensure the functional reliability of the systems and their software. This paper examines issues involved in ensuring the reliability of software in vehicle applications, with particular reference to the progress of the MISRA study, the implications of the guidelines and its relation to similar research.
