The paper describes the importance of incorporating self-test and diagnosis in addition to processing task as calibration, data evaluation, low-level control functions into Smart Sensors and explores self-test strategies in a Smart Sensor multichip module consisting of the sensing element, an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) and a standardised Microcontroller with Fieldbus Interface. A section on future work concludes the paper.
