As the need for electronic solution became clear, auto makers and their traditional suppliers responded by strengthening their in-house electronic capabilities, but it was natural to turn also to the defence sector with its enormous resources of technology and skilled engineers. In practice, however, the widely divergent cultures of the automobile and defence business made the marriage of the two and the desired technology transfer difficult to accomplish. The use defence technology is discussed in automobiles from the perspective of the early General Motors - Hughes Aircraft relationship and experience. In addition to on-board electronics applications, two specific points will be made. One is the contribution of defence technology to the process of designing and manufacturing automobiles, and the other is the counter-flow of manufacturing technology from the automotive field to the defence industry.
