Future spaceborne SAR systems will use active phased array antennas consisting of a large number of subarrays. In order to be able to predict the electrical performance of such large SAR antennas a 24x8 element phased array antenna breadboard in C-band (5.3 GHz) consisting of twenty-four 8x1 element subarrays has been designed and tested. Due to the used aperture-coupled microstrip patch elements the antenna breadboard shows an excellent polarization purity, a large bandwidth as well as a high radiation efficiency. The design and the measured performance of the subarrays and the antenna breadboard are presented.
