For spaceborne reconnaissance applications SAR systems with variable image geometries are required. Special SAR modes like scan-, looksteering- and spotlight-mode have to be investigated for suitability. This is done by a performance analysis including an optimisation with respect to spatial and radiometric resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, ambiguity and dynamic ratio which is followed by an end-to-end simulation comprising all elements of a SAR system like target, sensor, platform behaviour, data processing and image evaluation. The simulation is described in detail and illustrated by examples.
