Improved autonomous target recognition (ATR) equipment and techniques can significantly increase the effectiveness of present smart weapon systems. This development requires high speed signal or imaging processing capabilities, rapid database management techniques and high fidelity correlation algorithms. While recent technical advances in microcomputer hardware and software support make ATR improvements possible, a clear definition of a weapon system's mission and technical requirements are needed before more sophisticated ATR techniques reach operational reality. Based on target decision-making characteristics, smart weapons can be divided into two categories: autonomous and man-in-the-loop (MITL) systems. The Tomahawk land attack and anti-ship missiles are examples of autonomous systems. Once programmed and launched, these missiles use onboard sensors and guidance packages to locate and engage targets. MITL weapons, such as the standoff land attack missile (SLAM), are assisted in flight and in the final engagement decisions, by data updates and guidance provided from controllers on the launch platforms.
