The authors propose a method for designing modalized observers which achieves both small eigenvalue sensitivity and attenuation of the estimation error caused by an initial condition mismatch. The design approach is based on minimizing a cost function which depends on the norm of the observer modal matrix, its condition number, and directional information about the initial condition mismatch. The design method is compared with a previous approach to show its advantages.
