The US Army is entering a new era in the field of tactical night vision equipment and weapon aiming enhancements. Major advances in lasers, further development in vision tube technology and the refinement of cheaper single-tube night vision designs have led more of US Army personnel to learn the value of these tactical mission aids. Continuing technology developments will accelerate this trend over the next few years. These new tactical mission aid programs should be examined in the context of US history as well as current mission requirements. These programs include weapon sights, individual night vision systems and night vision weapon aiming devices. Together these programs give the US Army the advantage of a nighttime view of present and future battlefields.
