STC Defence Systems of Newport, United Kingdom, produces military tactical cables to withstand the rigors of field use. STC has been involved in the design, development and manufacture of a wide range of optical fiber cables for military use. Such materials are used not only in the sheath but also as strength members, buffers, on-line coatings and fillers. At one extreme are small reinforced fiber packages, 0.5 millimeters in overall diameter, that have been dispensed at Mach 1; at the other extreme are massive multicomponent dynamic strain cables. All of the fiber cables present special problems with regard to the materials used. Between the cable extremes lie the military tactical communication systems, which require small diameter and more rugged fiber optic cables that can withstand the rigors of military transport, storage and use.
