According to industry executives and scientists at aerospace companies and electronics firms, the United States' technical base necessary for development and production of advanced displays has declined so sharply that it currently is impossible to translate clean-room display technologies into efficient manufacturing capacity. Development of critical display technologies, the experts say, requires not only investment by industry, but also an active government role, including financial grants to business consortia and to companies doing key research.
