A software system for FLIR (forward-looking infrared) image processing and analysis is designed to track a closing target from its small-size image region to the vital part of the target with a large-size image region. To perform accurate guidance, the system can automatically select and track the aimpoint within the target region according to different requirements. A novel multithreshold image segmentation method is developed. Several geometric invariant features are extracted from segmented light regions and used in region matching and target tracking. Two methods of aimpoint selection and tracking are suggested. The system is tested on an image sequence and good performances are shown.
