The research and implementation of a flexible and general-purpose inference environment designed to take advantage of the MIL-STD-1750A architecture is described. The topics dealt with are expert systems, knowledge representation, inference mechanisms, reasoning with uncertainty, hardware environment, software environment, integration into 1750ISA, the METE algorithm, and the inference cycle. This environment will encompass a variety of techniques in knowledge representation, efficient reasoning, and uncertainty management that have proven to be essential in a variety of domains.
