The author considers how a highway authority in the UK is using computer engineering to help relieve traffic congestion. The Royal County of Berkshire is used as the example. Different methods of using computer engineering to ease traffic congestion are discussed. The geographic information system; computer traffic modelling; urban traffic control systems and computer aided design of highways and bridges are looked at.
