Automobiles have become a vital element of Japan's modern transportation infrastructure today and are indispensable to the conduct of daily life as well as to the country's industrial structure. Automobiles convey 71% of the people transported in Japan, account for 65% of the total transported population-kilometers and haul 91% of the nation's total freight tonnage. The prosperity of the industrialized nations of the world has been built on the basis of the development of the automobile as an effective form of overland transport.
