Automobile electronics have a major role to play in achieving safer road transport, especially if improved safety is to be achieved without sacrificing individual freedom of movement. There are two aspects to any study of safety and automotive electronics. The major area is what can new electronic systems do to reduce the probability and severity of accidents. The second is ensuring that when electronics are introduced they do not cause vehicles to behave in an unpredictable or unintended manner. In order to see how new electronic systems might contribute to safer roads the author looks at why accidents occur and then to look at how electronics might be used to reduce or eliminate some of the principal causes.
