Because the response surface of an embedded knowledge-based component in a real-time control system is complex, and the set of possible conditions and values is unbounded, comprehensive testing of the KBS is often impossible. Such systems can be validated, but validation must be defined by the system surrounding the component, and by the inherent limitations that system imposes. For sensor control systems, this means looking at the system's behavior with and without the KBS component the locus of validation is within the idea of intelligent control. In essence, the key is to define validation requirements as part of the design, and to design the intelligent component within the limits imposed by the system. To illustrate these concepts, we have developed a successful prototype of a real-time sensor control system for a high-speed jet aircraft. This system was developed and tested in both KEE and Kappa.
