A high reliability level is required for IGBT modules used in power converters in railway traction applications, which are subject to high stress due to the typical cycling operations which cause thermomechanical fatigue. The paper reports Ansaldo Trasporti activity in IGBT reliability testing. A facility simulating the worst case traction operation is described and the results after operation are presented; due to the stressing action, a solder delamination at the base plate seems to be the first failure mechanism to be excited.
