The paper describes tribological research in support of the development of high conformity gears for use in a helicopter main rotor gearbox. In gears of this type contact between the meshing teeth occurs, nominally, at a point. A sound understanding of the system geometry has been developed and the results of this work are used as the basis for calculating contact stresses and the analysis of elastohydrodynamic lubrication. An experimental programme is described in which the contact conditions are simulated in a special rig. Testing and service experience and the way in which they influence tribological design are also discussed.
