A comprehensive review of available Railroad freight car roller bearing defect and failure data is presented. Causes for bearing removal and failure are discussed and the survival curve for miles to replacement is given. Finally the survival curve for miles to bearing overheat is presented. The data sources include the Association of American Railroads Car Maintenance Cost Data Base, Wheel Failure Data Base, and Wheel Shop Reports. The report concludes: The shape of the survival curves suggest preventative maintenance based solely on miles of service is not advisable, the failure rate of roller bearings becomes very constant between 50.000 and 250.000 miles of service. Problems with the available data are discussed. Many of the problems are inherent in the nature of roller bearing failures.
