Most applications of tethers can be placed into four broad categories: momentum transfer, special positioning of a probe in space, electrodynamics, and gravity generation. Efforts are underway to define concepts for several of these applications and to develop the supporting analytical and prototype hardware that are critical to the development of the final flight systems. Plans are being made to fly some of these tether systems on the Shuttle to demonstrate feasibility. This paper outlines the concepts and summarizes in broad terms the current efforts underway in both America and Italy on tether applications.
