The design of passive damping into large space structures (LSS) has gained increasing interest in the past several years due to the advantages inherent in a passive control design. These advantages include strict stability, high reliability, relatively low cost, and little or no power requirements. This paper includes examples of large space structures which will benefit from passive damping treatments, the design goals characteristic of these structures, and outlines a basic design approach to achieve the desired damping levels in actual hardware. The paper also shows the application of the design method to structures which have been fabricated and dynamically tested for damping performance under the Passive and Active Control of Space Structures (PACOSS) program.
