A mathematical model of a system consisting of a collector/radiator, collector heat exchanger, thermal storage, and a water source heat pump has been developed. The model has been linked to building heating and collection loads and utilizes weather data from the ASHRAE WYEC tapes. The performance of such a comfort conditioning system depends on the properties and characteristics of the major components, on the storage tank base temperature, on the ratio of collector areas to storage volume, on the building heating and cooling loads, and on the local climate. The detailed analysis described in this paper is a parametric invesitgation of the effect of varrying a number of these quantities, individually and, in some cases, in concert. Initially, the model is used to determine the optimum collector area/storage tank volume to handle the design day cooling load for a given location. Then, the annual energy savings, as compared to an air-source heat pump, is determined for three different climate conditions using hour-by-hour computations. It is predicted that maximum annual energy savings would be realized in locations with moderate climates (Doge City, KS), less in cold climates (Madison, WI) and least in warm climates (Brownsville, TX).
