Disc brakes have not been a success for heavy vehicles up to now. Some applications with hydraulic disc brakes are running in Europe on buses. The first pneumatic disc brakes with plain screw sliding calipers in the USA failed because of low mechanical efficiency and problems with compatibility with other brakes. New designs have overcome the mechanical efficiency problem. Life, space and compatibility are still not satisfactory solved, weight is equal to drum brakes and prices are high. The only real benefit is a more stable torque. A new problem is vibrations. The balance of cost effectiveness has not turned over to the advantage of the disc brake for heavey vehicles yet.
