The automobile industry is a recognized leader in the use of industrial lasers for cutting, welding, drilling and surface treatment applications. Approximately 15 % of the industrial lasers sold to date are located in the international auto industry. The manufacturing and assembly demands of the auto industry are being met by a variety of laser types in a range of power levels. Because of the severe operating conditions typical in this industry, unusual requirements in terms of lasers and laser systems have been met by innovative industry suppliers. This paper will identify some of the workplace conditions and illustrate the laser solution by various successful examples of welding, cutting, drilling and heat treating. A review of the current auto industry usage will show why these applications have been utilized in the manufacturing cycle.
