The results from vibration signature analyses of Model 400 and Model 412 helicopter main rotor transmissions during fatigue tests under a 140 % overtorque condition are reported. The progression of vibration characteristics from baseline data until the test was shut down due to failures or impending failures are shown. Correlation of these signatures with deteriorated or failed gear and bearing components are presented. The results from a gear pitting test are also presented. Signature analysis methods employed range from the more sophisticated side banding and rationing of gear mesh frequencies to corresponding higher harmonics along with the more simplistic trending of spectral analyses. A description of the transmission bench test facilities and instrumentation associated with gearbox testing at Bell is given. Other Bell experience with signature analyses of fault-implanted bench and aircraft tests are briefly decribed as is the experience with a current state-of-the-art diagnostic system. It is concluded that for the case studies described, a clear indication of gear failures is identifiable by an experienced analyst in spectral analysis; whereas, the success rate of the more sophisticated procedures, although higher, is marginally acceptable for production applications.
