American motor corporations are already using Design For Automation techniques and in some cases showing remarkable savings. UK and other European companies are increasingly incorporating the thinking from the earliest design stages, most of them conscious of the impact of 1992. Good design for automated manufacture will be one of the vital elements for any automotive company that wishes to remain successful in the future. This paper focuses on one of the key aspects: Design For Assembly. It touches on design for quality and some of the relationships between component characteristics and the final product assembly and test needs. It exemplifies some of the design considerations for different automated processes and suggests some different routes to acquire the necessary detailed capability.
