The Aluminium Company of America (Alcoa) has worked with several automotive partners since 1982 to develop a lightweight aluminum body structure suitable for mass production. The Alcoa Aluminum Intensive Vehicle (AIV) concept consists of an innovative spaceframe fabricated from extrusions and high performance die castings joined by arc welding or adhesive bonding. Body closure and structural panels may be manufactured from aluminum, composite, or steel sheet. Major advantages of this system include parts reduction and significantly lower tooling investment compared to conventional unibody construction, making this structure particularly cost effective in volumes of less than 100000 units per year. This presentation, Alcoa's first publish disclosure of seven years of intensive development work, will focus on an overview of AIV's technical concept and a description of its potential benefits to carmakers and owners.
