The theoretical basis for acoustic modelling in the frequency domain, using finite and boundary elements, is reviewed, together the merits of different methods and their embodiment in software. Examples of applications are shown, emphasising work on the sensitivity of results to geometry changes and the correlation of analysis and measurements. Future developments are outlined, including the need for improved descriptions of acoustic materials.
