The modern tractor is a complex machine which places special demands upon lubricants. The system to be lubricated are engine, transmission and gearbox, rear axle and wet brakes and hydraulics. There are two main approaches to tractor lubrication: Super Universal Tractor Oil (SUTO/STOU) and Engine Lubricant Universal Tractor Transmission Oil (UTTO). Certain conflicts can arise between the obvious need for the operator to minimise the number of lubricants in use and the specified requirements of the OEM. The paper describes in detail lubricant specifications for farm tractors and discusses the technical aspects of the compromises which have to be considered in attempting rationalisation. Finally current trends in farm tractor lubrication are described together with probable future developments.
